MIX N MATCH SUMMARY
Four glorious days of tennis weather, plus the camaraderie and good fellowship from the best of our tennis community made for an extraordinarily fun, satisfying, and pleasantly exhausting Mix & Match Tournament. In the final tally with 216 games won. Mike McComb’s Court Jesters repeated as winners, with an entirely different team of players from last year. Even more exciting was Randi Selman’s Slice of Life. Sitting in 7th place after the first day of play, the stalwart Slicers gained ground every day to post 208 games won and nip Jayne Sulser’s Tie Breaks (203) and Don McCarl’s Slice and Dice (205) for the runner-up award. See the SCTA website for pictures and results.
In the Match Point 1-point tournament, the boys’ division was snatched by Steve Sandike and Brad Buck while the girls featured repeat winner Cindy Good with new partner Corinne Miller.
Here’s a tremendous shout out to all the dedicated volunteers in Food & Beverage, Captains & Co-captains, Food Grilling, Scorekeeping, Court Monitoring, Set up and Tear Down, Match Scheduling, and WTO Match Point team.

Members, below please find the agenda for next week’s (March 2) Board of Directors’ Meeting. I have also attached a file copy for your convenience.
Members, can you believe it’s almost March?! In this Eblast, you will find information related to March activities and events as well as other updates. Enjoy!
Board Meeting, Bayside Room, Lakehouse, Wednesday, March 2
You have received your copy of the March agenda already. Please keep in mind that the meeting is open to all members with the time slot of 6 – 7 pm dedicated to completing Board business. After that is finished—usually around 7 pm, the floor is open to member comments and issues.
Luck of the Irish Social by WTO
On March 16, 2022, at 3:30 pm, WTO is hosting their St. Paddy’s Wine and Cheese party. In addition, since WTO is hosting the Match Point Event as part of Mix n Match, they will be teaching those interested how to play Match Point while hosting a Match Point Play Off, so you are prepared for the big event during Mix n Match. This is a Ladies Only event with signups starting on February 25 at the Logo Building. You do not need a partner to participate in Match Point activities. All levels of players are welcome! Don’t miss the fun event! Take a look at the attached flyer.
You asked for it—your Board listened!
Many members have requested seating on the north side, so groups can congregate before and after matches, and spectators have a place to sit. YOU GOT IT! The Community Association (CA) installed wo picnic tables and benches on the north side by the tennis courts after the SCTA board requested them. Also, the CA paid for these tables and benches.
You asked for it—your Board listened!
Reminder: starting March 1, the new sweeping times are as follows: 1) at the start of the noon reservation; and 2) before time expires on the 3:30 reservation. Signage reflecting this change is ready to be installed, and we will be working on installation beginning this week.
CELEBRATE! You asked for it—your Board listened!
THE NEW PRINTED MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORIES ARE HERE! BEGINNING THURSDAY, MARCH 3, AT 9 AM, YOU CAN PICK UP YOUR DIRECTORY AT THE LOGO BUILDING.
Your Board members will be outside the Logo Building distributing directories on Thursday and Friday from 9 am to 4 pm. To get your directory, simply walk up to the table and give us your name. In turn, we will give you your directory. A special thanks to Dudley Kay for his hard work on the directory.
Moveable Benches on the South Side
As you are aware, there are moveable benches distributed on the South Side along the sideway between courts. From time-to-time, spectators move these benches, so they can better see a match. This is understandable, but we ask that you move these benches back to their original location. These benches are provided, so players waiting to take a court can sit with their gear. This allows sidewalks by the courts to remain clear and players on the court uninterrupted. Please be respectful of all times and players. For example, if you have a 10:30 reservation, you need to have cleared the court by noon at the latest, so the next group can take the court. All of us experience this situation from both sides; let’s be polite and transition appropriately.
SCTA THANK YOU!!!
A hearty SCTA thank you to Chris Scott and Rodney Scott for fixing the gate on court 16. SCTA relies on our volunteers and Chris and Rodney deserve our thanks.
SCTA News – February 21, 2022

USTA LIAISON
A quick reminder that USTA season is well under way, and we have our own Mary deCesare handling all questions regarding USTA and Sun City teams. In particular, USTA team captains can contact Mary at bucksdecesare@yahoo.com.
BALL MATCHINE SUCCESS STORY!!!
As Gavin and his team continue to fine tune Chelsea, he and his Logo Building staff need to be congratulated for finding a problem with Chelsea. Two of the Logo Building staff asked why some names kept showing up with ball machine reservations while others got overflow. After a thorough investigation, they uncovered a Chelsea system glitch that has now been corrected. A HUGE THANK YOU TO GAVIN COX, HIS TEAM, AND ALL WHO WORKED ON THIS ISSUE!
YOU ASKED FOR IT! COURT SWEEPING TIMES CHANGED!
Quite a few members requested a change in court sweeping times at the noon hour. Your Board of Directors has listened to your request and made the following changes effective March 1, 2022. The new times for sweeping the courts is at the beginning of the 12-noon reservation and before time expires for the 3:30 pm. reservation.
MIX N MATCH UPDATE
A number of Mix & Match players’ plans have changed due to travel and other factors. This has created openings for 3.0 Men. Also, subs will be needed for some days, and there are wait-lists for full spots. If your own plans have changed and you can now play in Mix & Match April 28 – May 1, please sign up. There is no charge until the April 21 Party kicks things off. Register here.

NEW EVENT
Shoutout for Crossover Tennis/Softball Players!
A big shout-out to all Tennis players who also enjoy watching Softball. Many of your teammates and players with whom you play tennis are also players on the Ladies Peg Welch Softball Teams. The Softball season opens Sunday, March 6th, at 2:45, and we would love to have you join us for our opening day ceremonies and games. We welcome your support and camaraderie.
Thank you and we will see you courtside and, hopefully, by the diamond.
On Opening Day, the Ladies Softball teams are hosting a bake/pretzels sale to benefit the League. Come on out and join the fun!
Printed Membership Directory Update!
Dudley Kay has been working tirelessly on securing funding for printing the SCTA Membership Directory. Yes, you are reading correctly; Dudley has secured outside funding, so SCTA funds do not have to be used to pay for this directory. All information updates have been collected and Dudley is working to get the directory to the printer in the very near future. Please take a moment and review the cover page of this booklet which is attached. Thanks! Dudley!
Recycling Program Hits New Levels!
The Scott Foundation (Chris & Linda Scott) has taken on the responsibility to recycle tennis cans/balls and plastic drink bottles for Sun City Tennis Association. No SCTA funds are used for this five-year commitment for helping our planet. Please take a moment and review the attached information on this terrific program!! Way to go, Chris and Linda.!!!
Thanks & Shoutout!
A huge thank you to Bob Bindus and Kim Scoggins for installing boards at the bottom of the back fence on court 4. This will help save the fencing and it is much easier to keep balls in the court. Well done!
When Courts are too Wet
Please note that when the temperature goes below freezing, the courts have the possibility of freezing because there is water on the surface. The problem is when the courts start to thaw, the water comes to the surface and the courts become unplayable. This is especially true for courts with shade.
LOGO Building Lost Item
The LOGO Building staff asked us to report that a Yeti was turned into them, and they are searching for the Yeti’s owner. If this is yours, please go to the LOGO Building and describe it to get it.
DON’T FORGET TO REVIEW ALL THE ATTACHMENTS!

SCTA News – January 30, 2022
Members, it’s that time of week again. Below you will find information on upcoming events, as well as a request to volunteer at an upcoming event. Also, this is your last opportunity to double check your directory information. Remember! Don’t reply to this Eblast, but you can reply to the email address at the end of each announcement.
Women’s Tennis Organization Food Drive
The Women’s Tennis Organization (WTO) is having their Food For Love drive to benefit Bluffton Self Help. This is our 7th annual drive. We will be accepting any donations of non-perishable food items, personal care items, and cash or checks. Listed are the items they have the most need for at this time but any nonperishable item is most welcome.
Cash and checks, made out to Bluffton Self Help are used to purchase eggs, milk, meat, fresh fruit and veggies and other needed items.
We will have boxes and an envelope for monetary donations set up at the LOGO Building starting Friday 2/4. Our delivery date to Bluffton Self Help is Friday 2/11.
See attached flyer for further information. Any questions, please contact JoEllen Bitner at jobit@aol.com.
LAST CHANCE TO UPDATE PRINTED MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY
Your last chance to submit corrections to your listing, be it phone, email, or changing your formal first name for your informal “on the court” name is midnight, Monday, January 31. Submissions after that will not be included in the directory. The only exception to this is the results of the Feb 5 ratings clinic, which will be included in the printed directory.Any changes should be sent to Michael Sacks at msacks3@gmail.com.
Mix & Match Volunteers
Non-players are needed in two important areas:
1) Grillmeister and Assistants – Love those juicy burgers and perfectly grilled dogs? We will be without the Marvelous Muellers this year, so a “head chef” and assistants are needed to staff the grill. Who’s got culinary game?
2) Court Monitoring and Maintenance – Chris Scott is heading up a team of volunteers to get players onto the courts, warming up within time limits, getting them off the court for the next match, and sweeping the courts between matches.

NEW PERGOLAS/SHADES
SCTA MEMBER DIRECTORY ACCURACY
Is your directory information 100% accurate? We are close to going to the printer, and YOU are the best person to check your listing before we go to print. Please open the attached PDF file and look for your listing. Accessing the attached pdf, please check for these items:
-
- First name– This is used by your tennis friends. Do you really want to show Lawrence or Patricia when everybody knows you as Larry and Pat? Please consider using the name you go by ON THE COURT.
- Phone – Most people trying to reach you would prefer the option of text or email. Please show your cell phone number if you have one and use it.
- Accurate Data– Typos can and do occur, particularly in email addresses. Check every item very, very carefully.
Report all changes to Michael Sacks. You need not reply if everything is just as you want it. msacks3@gmail.com
SCTA MIX n MATCH TOURNAMENT
We are now taking Waitlist/Sub registrations for Women’s 2.5 and 3.0 levels but have a few more spots for 3.5 and 4.0. On the Men’s side, the 3.5 and 4.0 positions are full. There is one 3.0 slot open and 2.5 is wide open. Please contact Dudley Kay at dudkay69@gmail.com to sign up.
BIG NEWS
Chris Scott, Past President, SCTA has announced that TerraCycle in Trenton New Jersey will be taking our Tennis Lids, the ORANGE ones, for recycling.
#6 Rigid Plastic Cups – Zero Waste Box™ – US (terracycle.com)
The boxes they provide, approximately $200.00, which will include shipping from here to New Jersey. Each box will hold between 20,000 and 30,000 lids. We’re over 1/2 of that now. My previous contact in Alabama would only take a 4x4x4 pallet size, probably a million lids.
What this means, is that 99.9% of the tennis can product is being recycled, only the FILM on the outside will not be recycled. I’ve written to a recycling expert in Australia for her to possibly figure out a way to recycle that material. She specializes in finding ways to recycle difficult items.
Chris’s foundation will cover all costs associated with this ongoing project.
From zero recycling to 99.9% in 9 months. GREAT JOB!
Our membership has made this a huge success with their ongoing support. PLEASE CONTINUE TO RECYCLE YOUR TENNIS BALLS, CANS , AND LIDS,& PLASTIC BOTTLES!
PSA ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE COMPUTER CLUB
Members, your safety is important to your SCTA Board, so when we had the opportunity to include a PSA from the Computer Club regarding current scams, we wanted to make sure we got this information to you. If you are interested in reading this information, please open the attached file.

SCTA News – January 17, 2022
USTA Coordinator Appointed
Please welcome Mary deCesare as the USTA Coordinator for SCTA. With approximately 300 members participating on 20 USTA teams, the SCTA board recognized the need for someone to coordinate the multiple elements involved in this league. The board approached Mary because of her experience in USTA as both a player and team captain. She has extensive knowledge in this area, and we are pleased that she has agreed to take on this position. Please welcome Mary when you see her.
To support transparency, we want all members to know that USTA home matches begin the week of January 31 and have been scheduled at both the 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm time slots throughout the week. One way to check court availability each month is to visit

- Scroll down throught this document to view court assignments for each week of the current month.

Please note that should you book “a court time immediately following a USTA match, there may be a delay in using your court if a USTA match is not yet completed” (Policies & Procedures, p. 11). While going over the scheduled time is not normal in a USTA match, it does occur. We want everyone to be aware that this may happen.
If you have the opportunity, please come out and cheer your fellow members as they represent SCTA in USTA matches.
MIX n MATCH
The Mix & Match Social Tournament is filling up fast with player registrations. Better not drag your tennis shoes. The Women’s 2.5 and 3.0 brackets are full, but we are taking names for a Waitlist. The Men’s 3.0 is nearly full, just a few more spots. There are openings for both 3.5 Men and Women as well as 4.0 Men and Women. All told there are 124 players signed up in one week’s time!

Printed Membership Directory
Again, Dudley Kay is leading the charge in the printing of our Membership Directory. He has secured sponsors whose ads will pay for the publication. Expect distribution in early spring. Also, to ensure up-to-date information, all names, addresses and ratings are being verified.
Bucket Brigade
Director at Large, Bob Bindus has taken on the daunting job of making sure our courts are ready for play. Even after the vicious windstorm we had recently, Bob and his fellow players, Rick Sulser, Tom Jones, and Kim Scoggins worked hard to help secure all downed wind screens, so that Sun City tennis members could get back on the courts as soon as possible. Other clubs, who don’t have this type of Bucket Brigade are still working to prepare their courts. Thanks to Bob, Rick, Tom, and Kim for their help. To be ready for future events, Bob is looking for volunteers to join his Bucket Brigade. If you can volunteer, please phone Bob at 616-308-4263 or email him at sudnib@mac.com
SCTA Monthly Meetings
At last Wednesday’s meeting, Cindy Good, President, announced that we will hold two General Membership meetings, one in May and the second in November. After discussion, the board voted unanimously to hold an Executive Session from 6 – 7 pm to conduct agenda business at the monthly board meetings. Following this executive session, the meeting will then be open to all SCTA members. To keep members informed, the secretary will prepare a summary of what transpired prior to opening the meeting to the membership. If after reviewing the agenda, which will be posted one week in advance of the Board meeting, any member who wishes to discuss something further, voice a concern, or offer an alternate view, can contact Cindy Good cgood@sandssearch.com or Sheryl Tschetter Sheryl.tschetter@hotmail.com to be placed on the agenda for the 6-7 time slot.
Monthly Meeting Minutes
To continue our goal for transparency, we are attaching the minutes from the last board meeting on January 5, 2022. These minutes can now be found three ways: at the Bulletin Board by LOGO; on the SCTA website: www.sctatennis.com, and as an attachment to an Eblast. Please review the attached minutes.
