SCTA News – Apr. 22, 2024

Message from Chuck Hirsch, Interim President

Good evening SCTA members. My name is Chuck Hirsch and I just want to introduce myself to you as your new interim president. Thanks to all of you who supported and voted for me, it means a lot that you put your trust in me for the remainder of this year. I would also like to thank Mike McCombs for running. The vote was very close, so those of you who know Mike and supported him, please thank him for running also. As I said in my resume/application for the spot, the first thing I wanted to do was to meet with the Board members to get updated on where we are at with all of the moving parts of our club. I was able to meet with most of them yesterday morning. Without going into a long lengthy explanation of those talks, we had nice conversations, and everyone filled me in on their particular duties within the Club. Everything seems to be in good shape as we approach the summer months. Thanks to all of the Board members for what they do for our +/- 750 members. As we move forward, if there is anything I can do, or one of our Board members or committee volunteers, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Public Tennis

There’s a huge opportunity to use our passion for tennis to serve a nearby community which is very much in need!

The opportunity is at the Hardeeville school, just 15 minutes down the road.

The tennis courts at the school, previously abandoned, were recently revitalized through a USTA Foundation grant procured by local nonprofit Public Tennis.  Public Tennis needs our help to build in-school, after-school, adaptive (Special Olympics), and community tennis programs.

If you’re interested in volunteer coaching, contributing, or working with Public Tennis in another capacity on this project, please contact Wayne Lilley (wayne@publictennis.org).  Note that all skill levels are welcome, coach training is provided, and hours are flexible.

Let’s do our best to take the Hardeeville school “under our wing” and positively impact the lives of children.  See the attachment below.

I believe this is an amazing opportunity for those who wish to serve our local schools, kids, Special Olympics and more.  I plan on getting involved.  Join me.- Tyler

SCTA News – Mar. 28, 2024 – Update

Dear SCTA Members,

Your board is announcing the resignation of Dane Petchul as President and Debbie Ward as Secretary.  This has occurred at a difficult time and is a surprise to all of us, especially after Deb Welsh’s heartfelt passing and thus the open Membership position.

With three open positions your board felt we had to act quickly.  We were looking for experience and continuity.  Michael Sacks offered his services for the Membership position.  With his tremendous experience and knowledge base, the board duly elected him to finish the term in its entirety.  Laurie Williams, who ran for the position of Secretary, is very highly thought of by the board and has the required skill sets.  She was approached to fill that position and has accepted it.  She was duly elected by the board to finish the term in its entirety.  The Board felt the office of the President needed to be filled as soon as possible by someone providing experience and continuity.

The board asked Chris Scott if he would consider an interim position as President to lend his vast experience until an election for President could be accomplished by the entire voting membership.  He agreed to become interim President, chair the upcoming board meeting, and assist the board with operations so an election of a new President could take place right away.  The board greatly appreciated his offer and unanimously voted to approve his temporary position.

We are immediately looking for volunteers for a nominating committee, as well as resumes of those who would like to run for the office of President.  The new President will have the full duties of the office, and hold the office thru December 31 of 2024, at which time the current Vice President will transition to that position as per our by-laws.  The board has been diligent in following the SCTA’s by-laws throughout this process.

We ask for your understanding and patience.  We have been placed in a very difficult situation.  We are keeping the SCTA’s and the members’ best interests first and foremost.

Thanks to all of you for your fantastic support.  I truly love serving as your Vice President.

Tyler Tollstrup – SCTA Vice President

SCTA News – Mar. 28, 2024

Cool Guy:  That website survey was easy and awesome.  I just love our website.  So helpful.  I check it all the time.

Uncool Guy:  Not me.  I never check our website or fill out surveys.  And I heard that goofy Vice President has stuff on it.  Hey, do you know when Trivia night is?  Or when the Summer Lottery starts?  How about the Mix and Match dates?  Do you know how I can get a date with a hot tennis chick?

Moral:  Don’t be asking dumb questions.  Read the website.  Fill out the survey for an improved one.  Hot tennis chicks don’t like dumb guys.

SCTA Website Survey

The SCTA needs your input! We are revising the SCTA website (sctatennis.com) and need to know what is important to you. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey at https://forms.gle/Tv5M5oo2UE9u2fu16. Your thoughts are valuable and appreciated! The survey will close on 3/31/2024.  Thank you.

SCTA News – Mar. 23, 2024

Cool Guy:  I had so much fun filling out the SCTA Website Survey that I lost track of time, became physically excited, and cried when it ended.

Uncool Guy:  What?  I never fill out surveys.  Even really important ones that greatly help the SCTA do a better job serving me.

Really Hot Tennis Chick Walking By:  Hey.  One of you guys fill out that Hot survey?  I could use a Hot date.

Moral:  Don’t be left alone this Saturday night.  Fill out the survey.

In Memory Of

What a wonderful turnout last Thursday in PJ Mahoney’s backyard for his well- deserved tribute and extended round of applause.  Thank you to all who came to honor him and his family with your presence.  There were at least 90-100 people there both from tennis and golf.

Sadly, PJ passed away about 3 hours later.  His wife, Julia said that she believes he was holding on for his ‘party’ and now he is at his eternal ‘party’.  SCTA is a better club because of PJ and his leadership and tireless efforts to give everyone the opportunity to “Get in the Game”.

Rest in Peace, PJ.  You will be missed!.

Board Meetings

The Next Two SCTA Board Meetings will both be in Pinckney Hall in the Kiawah River Room at 6 pm.

I would like to thank everyone who has submitted ideas, suggestions, and criticisms to the board.  We discuss them all, and are working to incorporate many of them.  Keep them coming.  Your board is listening.

Huge thanks to Mike Ryan and his crew for court maintenance.  Mother Earth thanks Chris Scott for all of his recycling efforts.  As always, a big thank you to all our members and the volunteers who make our tennis association so fantastic.  We really appreciate you. tylertollstrup@aol.com.

Intro

We have seen man’s capacity for Love and Hate.  We have seen Tyler’s capacity for Formatting and Speling errors.  This Eblast is from Las Vegas.  Please excuse plenty of both. – From Michael Ryan

A Good Measure

An important task was recently completed and deserves recognition. SCTA members Mickey Boisvert and Tony Aguda measured every panel on every court on both the south and north sides for accurate windscreen ordering. They created a graphic document with all the measurements and layout which was shared with Facilities and Logo. This will make the process easier and quicker for work order submission, ordering, and installation. This is SCTA volunteerism above and beyond – Mickey and Tony, you have our thanks!

Court Four Drainage

After years of asking and making the case for better drainage on court 4, we are making real, solid progress! Vegetation has been removed, drains are being installed, and a dry well will be created. More work will need to be done, but this is a great example of the cooperation between SCTA, the SCHHCA Common Area team, and TLC.

We need to thank Chris Scott for his attention to this issue, and his hard, persistent work in making the case to SCHHCA at every level of the organization. This is what SCTA volunteerism brings to our tennis community!

Tennis Court Shoes

Charlie Sapernakis brought up a good point to me yesterday. He’s noticed people playing tennis without correct court shoes. These can scuff up the courts and really shouldn’t be used. I believe we have signs by the courts advising players what type of shoes should be worn.  Intraclub coordinators, tennis ambassadors, USTA captains, and social group leaders need to be aware and counsel folks wearing the wrong shoes.

Dr. Tyler’s Office – Tennis Elbow

Just a couple of recommendations.  Prior to playing heat your elbow/forearm muscles for ten minutes, followed by massaging your tender forearm muscles, followed by stretching those same muscle groups.  After play use ice for fifteen minutes over those same muscles. During play, if needed, use a tennis elbow strap to reduce the pulling away of the muscles from your elbow bones.  When I need one, my personal preference is the Band-It (I hold no financial interest).  Pros will tell you the underlying cause is your swing motion isn’t quite right.  They are correct.  Just ask Gavin.  Take a/some lesson(s) (I hold no financial interest).  Lastly, remember that rackets vary tremendously.  Their weight, balance, string tension, type of string, racket frame design, internal dampeners etc. all can influence the health of your forearm muscles.  Research your racket before you buy.  A trip to the Physical Terrorist never hurts either to learn some great stretches and exercises.  Or just stop and ask me out at the courts.

Comedy Club Trip

Please see the attached information below for an amazing upcoming comedy club outing.  Sign up while seats are available – Carolyn Walton.

Mardi Gras 2025

No matter what you have heard about pre-sale tickets selling like hotcakes for next year’s tawdry Mardi Gras Tennis Party on courts 5,6,and 7, late evening until sunrise, being sold by the Vice President, they are not……  tylertollstrup@aol.com.  After hours, apparently SCTA’s code of conduct, as well as the dress code, no longer apply.

Court Stands Usage

I love watching tennis.  Please feel free to do so from the stands at the courts.  Just try to access them causing little disturbance for those playing.  Wait for service changes and please leave the player’s rest area open and unused.  Thanks for your courtesy.

As always, a big thank you to all our members and the volunteers who make our tennis association so fantastic.  We really appreciate you. – Tyler.

SCTA News – Feb 8, 2024

Dr. Tyler’s Office

Seriously players.  A little COVID courtesy and caution.  If you know you have COVID please do not come to the courts to play tennis until your physician says you may do so safely.  Two of my best buddies now have COVID from a player who knew they were positive for COVID, and just three days into it.  While I’m no germaphobe, and my personal bout with COVID was no big deal, I do know some who have died.  Plenty of folks out at the courts are a bit older, not in perfect health, and perhaps a bit immuno-compromised.  Let’s look out for one another.  Thanks.

LOGO Bathrooms Update

The bathrooms are still closed, with an estimated opening of this Friday the 16th.  When asked about the various personal options for players in the meantime, I simply respond “Depends”……

Unusual Tennis Rules

Some of the rules mentioned below are not known by all players, but they do exist. By understanding them, you will be a better informed tennis player.

    • Can’t Touch The Ball – This rule is usually implied, but a player can only use his racket to hit the ball to the other side. If the ball makes contact with any body part or other materials, the player loses the point.
    • Can’t Touch The Net – A player cannot touch the net while a point is in play. If the player makes contact with the net, whether intentionally or unintentionally, he will lose the point.
    • The Racket Needs To Be In Contact With The Player’s Body – A player’s racket must be in contact with his body when hitting the shot. If the ball is out of reach and the player manages to throw his racket, hit the ball with it, and get the ball on the opponent’s court, he still loses the point because the racket was not touching his body.
    • Players Can’t Make Any Noise – While tennis players are allowed to grunt, they cannot make noises that might distract their opponent. If an umpire finds that this rule has been broken, hyndrance will have occurred and the player who made the noise will lose the point.
    • Can Hit The Ball Around The Net – A player can hit a shot around the net, as long as the shot lands on the opponent’s court. This shot is not only valid, but it is considered extremely skilled. A player cannot, however, hit a shot through the net (i.e. if there is a hole in the net and the ball goes through it).
    • No Ad Rule: Some matches may follow a “No-Ad” format, which means that when the point score in a game is 40 x 40, the player who wins the next point wins the game. This format is designed to make matches faster. In a doubles match, the receiving pair gets to choose which player will receive the serve.

Ball Machine Etiquette

I have found, no, I have heard, that if you taunt the ball machine it will put more balls into the net.  Taunting of any kind on SCTA courts is strictly forbidden.

Mix n Match Tournament Registration

Registration began January 15 for the Mix and Match Tournament. This is a great opportunity to meet new tennis players and socialize with friends. Player spots fill up fast, so register soon! See attached flyer for details. Register here: Registration Link– Donna Ryan.

More information to follow soon.

Mardi Gras 2025

New rules are being formulated to avoid what occurred on courts 5,6 and 7 Tuesday evening during a Mardi Gras Tennis Party.  No longer will any risqué solicitation or earning of beads be tolerated.

Court Changeover Protocol

Please wait outside of the tennis court areas, and the areas between the courts, until it is your time to begin your booked period.  This is an important courtesy for those still playing, perhaps in an important USTA tiebreaker for a Sun City team.  Thank you so much.

Trivia Winner – Brian Matteson

He guessed correctly that Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert played 80 times against each other over their professional careers.  Easy guess for him.  Rumor has it he dated Chrissy.

LOGO Building Position Available

The Logo building is looking to hire a part-time person.  Two afternoons per week.  Best if you have some office skills, know some tennis, and are really friendly.  Benefits- meeting tons of really cool players from all over the country who now call Sun City home.

As always, a big thank you to all our members and the volunteers who make our tennis association so fantastic.  We really appreciate you. – Tyler.

SCTA News – Feb 8, 2024

LOGO BUILDING BATHROOMS CLOSED

The men’s and women’s bathrooms are closed for upgrading until Friday February 16.  They could be finished earlier.  They are both closed, so there is no option of one unisex bathroom being available.  No porta potty will be provided.  The Purrysburg gym bathrooms will be available.  Please do not bring camping or backpacking potties to the courts.  Their usage is not permitted.  And the Environmental Protection Agency of South Carolina does not permit usage of the forest behind courts 7 thru 12.  We appreciate your cooperation.

TYLER’S TENNIS TRIVIA

How many times did Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert face off?  First correct answer wins an 8 track tape player for their car, or two cans of never before used tennis balls.

TENNIS RULES- Ball that cannot be called out is good.

Any ball that cannot be called out is considered to be good. A player may not claim a let on the basis of not seeing a ball. One of tennis’ more infuriating moments occurs after a long hard rally when a player makes a clean placement and an opponent says: “I’m not sure if it was good or out. Let’s play a let.” Remember, it is each player’s responsibility to call all balls landing on, or aimed at, the player’s side of the net. If a ball cannot be called out with certainty, it is good. When a player says an opponent’s shot was really out but offers to replay the point to give the opponent a break, it seems clear that the player actually doubted that the ball was out.

BALL MACHINE UPDATE

The ball machine has been officially downrated to a 3.5 after suffering a humiliating defeat to Tyler.  Board approved.

SCTA News – Feb 1, 2023

BACK ON THE COURTS

Isn’t it great to be back out on the courts again?  I played so hard my first day out I got blisters on my feet.  I won 6-2, 6-3.  That ball machine isn’t as tough as it thinks.  (hint: place the ball machine baseline center court, then hit into the corners.  It won’t get hardly any)  Have a blast everyone!

FROM MICHAEL RYAN- COURT MAINTENANCE SUPERHERO

Please check for zip ties when you’re on the court. The zip ties will break off the windscreen and may wind up on the court surface. They can be ground into the clay and scar the court. Please pick these (and other stuff) up and dispose in the trash.

We are checking and measuring windscreens on both the South and North courts. We’ll put in a bunch of work orders over the coming days. It’s a long order process, and the windscreens will be installed by the Community Association.

Wonder why courts 8 and 9 were closed for so long, even after other courts were opened after the freeze? Well, it’s because someone walked across the courts when they were in a wet, frozen state, and left deep shoe marks in the surface. Size 10 I estimate. As a result, the courts can’t be brought back to good condition by simply drying and sweeping – more extensive court maintenance needs to be performed.

Please don’t walk on the courts when they’re closed. Check Chelsea if you’re unsure of the court’s conditions, and err on the side of caution. Let’s treat our courts with love and respect, and they’ll thank you with sweet tape shots and calls that go your way.

HOW IMPORTANT IS RECYCLING A SINGLE ALUMINUM TENNIS CAN LID?

You – How much does a aluminum flip lid on a tennis can weigh.

ChatGPT – The weight of an aluminum flip lid on a tennis ball can is typically very light. It’s usually in the range of a few grams, often around 2 to 4 grams. The lids are designed to be lightweight while still providing a secure seal for the tennis balls inside the can. Keep in mind that these weights can vary slightly depending on the specific design and manufacturer of the tennis ball can.

We’ve recycled 19,200 tennis cans , it takes approx 15 of the aluminum flip lids to make one beer can. We’ve made 1,280 or 53 cases of beer cans, just from the aluminum flip lids off of tennis cans. Also, remember, every beer can recycled saves enough energy to run a TV FOR 3 HOURS.

Sun City tennis players know how to RECYCLE – Chris Scott

TENNIS ETIQUETTE

Opponent gets benefit of doubt – A player should always give the opponent the benefit of any doubt. When a match is played without officials, the players are responsible for making decisions, particularly for line calls. There is a subtle difference between player decisions and those of an on – court official. An official impartially resolves a problem involving a call, whereas a player is guided by the principle that any doubt must be resolved in favor of an opponent. A player in attempting to be scrupulously honest on line calls frequently will keep a ball in play that might have been out or that the player discovers too late was out. DRYING COURTS – YAY!!!

Many of our courts finally dried off enough to open for play today.  Thank goodness.  I’ve been watching guys I normally see out on the courts walking around Purrysburg with shaking hands, ataxic gates, facial tics, and about ten extra pounds.  We really needed to play again.  Yesterday my wife Cat and I moved the sofas up against the side walls, turned the large dining room table on its side, got a nerf ball from the garage, and played living room tennis.  She beat me 6-1, 6-3, but don’t tell anyone.  And our home and health insurances are likely voided.

Congratulations to Susan Sobolesky who submitted the first correct answer to the question whom did Steffi Graf defeat in the Olympic final to achieve the Golden Slam?  The answer was Gabriela Sabatini.

SCTA News – Jan. 19, 2023

Thanks to everyone who has sent in ideas, projects to consider, maintenance issues, and concerns.  I have met with quite a few members and will continue to do so.   Catch me on the courts, or at tylertollstrup@aol.com.  The board is very busy with lots of planning and ideas in the works.  Thanks again members.

FROZEN COURTS

The clay courts are watered from underground meaning there will always be water in the courts. When the night time temperatures fall below 32 degrees the courts will freeze. They give the appearance of being dry as they turn light grey in color. The problem arises when they start to thaw as the temperature rises above freezing. The water now rises to the surface and depending on how hard the freeze was the courts can sometimes appear that it has rained.

The water either evaporates or is absorbed back into the surface. Compounding the problem is the shade on one side of the courts which slows down the process.

Unfortunately we cannot fight Mother Nature and just have to be patient.- Gavin Cox.

TYLER’S TENNIS TRIVIA

Whom did Steffi Graf defeat in the Olympic final to achieve the Golden Slam?  The first correct answer will win either a Yamaha 450 horsepower vacuum cleaner, or two cans of unopened tennis balls.

TENNIS RULES- Reaching over the net.

Your tennis racket may not cross over the net to the other side to strike a ball.  The exception is when by crazy spin, or wind, the ball bounces on your side of the court, and then over to your opponents side.  Then you may reach over the net to strike the ball.  You still may not touch the net however.  Your racket may cross over the net as you follow through after you have already struck the ball on your side.

ICE, ICE BABY

The temperature has definitely been on the cold side lately, and there’s more to come. The courts freeze, and then water is drawn to the surface as they warm. We need to be mindful of this as court damage can occur if we get on the courts too quickly.  Check the Chelsea tennis front page for court closing information. Thanks for keeping the courts in great shape!

Red scoring discs have been placed on the courtside scoreboards on the north side. You’ll be able to monitor the matches while lounging at the Lakehouse pool. Thanks to Greg Pavan for always standing by to assist! – Michael Ryan.

BALL MACHINE

Thank you Brett for so quickly fixing the ball machine when it was making some excess noise.  Should our ball machine begin making increased noise again, please let the Logo building know, and they will pass it on to Brett for repair.

As always, a big thank you to all our members and volunteers.  We really appreciate you. – Tyler.

TYLER’S TENNIS TRIVIA

Don Budge was the first Player to win all 4 Grand Slams in a single year.  Most guessed Rod Laver.  He was the second.  The first correct answer was submitted by Diane Dowling who is super nice, and has a mean cross court topspin backhand.  She selected 2 cans of unopened balls.  Vettes are hard to get in and out of I understand.  Watch carefully for the next trivia question and respond quickly.

TENNIS RULES- Touching the net

“The point is lost if the player or the racquet, whether in the player’s hand or not, or anything which the player is wearing or carrying touches the net, net posts/singles sticks, cord or metal cable, strap or band, or the opponent’s court at any time while the ball is in play.”

MINUTES AND BUDGET

Please see the attachments below for the minutes and budget from our last meeting.

THE BUCKET BRIGADE NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

They Call It Stormy Sunday

Lots of wind on Sunday. The rain and wind made the courts a mess, and windscreens were blown down. Windscreens on both the south side and the north side are either back up or in the process of being restored. SCTA folks were on the courts at 7:00 AM picking up zip ties and branches and twigs, and reattaching scoreboards and waste bins.  Big kudos to TLC for hustling this morning and getting the courts together in a short time.

We Want You!

Join the bucket brigade! We need volunteers to help with projects such as cleaning the nets and court maintenance. No pay, but you’ll have the satisfaction of helping your tennis community. Two areas are involved – standard bucket brigade stuff, and also hurricane preparation. Please email michaelryan0813@gmail.com if you would like to be on the bucket brigade list, and let me know with which (or both) area you will help. Please include your phone number for ease of texting. – Michael Ryan

A big thank you to Michael Ryan, Chris Scott, TLC and all the volunteers who have and continue to make SCTA the best place for playing tennis.  We appreciate you.
