No sign up involved. This group is available for men and women. If you have any questions, please contact the group coordinator, Linda Borovich at codachance80@gmail.com, for more information.

It’s Time to Sign Up For Rookie League

The SCTA Rookie Tennis League is calling for beginner, novice, 2.0 and 2.5 tennis players to sign up for the Spring 2023 season. The league is also perfect for players who are returning to tennis after years away. The League is primarily social, providing an opportunity to meet other tennis players in a supportive environment. We also provide education as to the rules of the game, scoring, and etiquette. We do not provide tennis instruction but do refer players to tennis lessons and clinics offered by our wonderful professional staff.

The Spring 2023 Rookie League will meet Sundays from 2-4PM (note the time change!) beginning JANUARY 22, 2023 and ending May 7, 2023. Contact Donna Baumwell at Ladyd918@aol.com or 843-707-1946 no later than December 31, 2022.

SCTA News – November 21, 2022

Your Board Has Listened!

At our recent membership meeting, it was brought to the Board’s attention that Intraclub participants wanted to return to a two-hour time slot, preferably at noon.  The sentiment was that Intraclub participants were all Sun City residents and should take priority over USTA, which often has only 50% of the participants being Sun City residents.  The problem with this formula is that USTA matches need to be completed and it usually takes at least two hours.  That is when Steve Sandike suggested that it might be possible to alter Chelsea to have two, two-hour time slots in the afternoon to accommodate both groups.
Cindy presented Steve’s idea to Health and Wellness, as they control Chelsea, as well as Brad Phillips, General Manager of Sun City Hilton Head.  The proposal was to have two, two-hour time slots each day — 12 noon – 2 PM and 2 PM – 4 PM.  At 4 PM the time intervals would revert to 1 ½ hour time slots — 4 PM – 5:30 PM, 5:30 PM – 7 PM, 7 PM – 8:30 PM, and 8:30 PM – 10 PM.  Bottomline, is that we would have the same number of time slots available to players each day; they would just be pushed forward a half an hour.  With this plan, the courts would be swept at the beginning of the 12-noon playtime, just as they are presently.  The second sweeping would occur at the end of the 4:00 time slot or before 5:30 pm.
Yesterday, Cindy received approval from the Community to make these changes and Gary Green and Steve Sandike are currently working on the Spring schedule.  Intraclub will be scheduled at 12 noon and USTA will be scheduled at 2 PM.  To change Chelsea, the system will need to be shut down one day between Christmas and New Year’s, so all the software updates can be made by Gary and Steve.  The new time slots will go into effect starting Monday, January 2nd, prior to the January 5th Lottery.   Tennis is alive and well in Sun City as both USTA and Intraclub entities continue to grow in numbers.  This change in Chelsea will hopefully insure a bright future for all concerned.  Please contact Cindy at cindygood@gmail.com if you should have any questions or concerns.

Previous Treasurer’s Reports

In our October 5th Board minutes, it was acknowledged that there were two checks involving the WTO (February and May) that needed to be reclassified and a bookkeeping error in March where there was a duplicate deduction.  The corrected Treasurer’s Reports for February, March and May were presented to the Board and then approved.  Moving forward to our November Membership meeting, Lyn Herrick presented the fact that the August Treasurer’s Report posted online had an ending balance that was different from the September Treasurer’s report beginning balance.  It was then obvious that the updates that had been made in February, March and May had not been carried forward to subsequent Treasurer’s reports.

Rather than continuing to correct the individual reports and potentially making more errors, the decision was made to start from scratch using the December 2021 year-end balance and recreating all Treasurer’s Reports from January to October 2022, then balancing them against the SCTA checkbook.  Once this task was accomplished the Board was asked to vote via Election Runner (electronic voting), to approve the ten reports.  At the conclusion of the voting, all 10 reports were approved unanimously. You can review these reports on the SCTA website beginning November 21.

At the October Board meeting, SCTA Treasurer, Kim Scoggins, provided an overview of the September Treasurer’s report and explained a few corrections to the February, May and March reports (attached here), as follows:
    1. Reclassification of two transactions involving WTO was corrected in the February and May reports (resulting in WTO’s balance being reduced by $654.35 while SCTA’s balance was increased by that amount).
    2. A bookkeeping error in March where a deduction for printing expenses was entered but it had already been entered in the February report (see the attached corrected reports).

TENNIS IN THE PINK UPDATE

WTO would like to thank all of you who participated in Tennis in the Pink, on October 12th!  It was wonderful seeing so many people dressed in pink to recognize those currently battling Breast Cancer and honor those who’ve survived and who we’ve lost to Breast Cancer.
We would like to also thank all of you who made a donation to Pledge the Pink Foundation. Pledge the Pink Foundation is a local, nonprofit public charity dedicated to funding breast cancer screening, treatment, outreach and research. They provide funding for free mammograms, medical assistance, and outreach services to the people who need it most and too often are lost in a system of endless paperwork.  Quite simply, they fill the gap and eliminate the red tape and bureaucracy.
If you were unable to stop by our table and would still like to make a donation, please visit the Logo Building and drop off cash or a check, made out to “Pledge the Pink Foundation” to the “WTO Tennis in the Pink” box.  The box will be left in the Logo Building for the next week!  Thanks again for all your support!

Lottery Courts

One benefit of SCTA membership is the opportunity to request lottery courts each season. However, the attainment of these lottery courts carries responsibilities. The Logo Building staff has requested we issue a reminder that the SCTA policy requires that leaders of all groups with Lottery courts or a designated alternate must EDIT the booking and enter the names of each player who has agreed to play on each court at least a day before your scheduled play.   If this is not done each week, the Logo Building will email the group leader a reminder to do so. If a leader receives two such emails and does not comply, the Logo Building staff will notify the SCTA Board and “failure to comply with these rules may result in consequences” including loss of SCTA and/or pre-placement privileges

Each week, please take the time to fill in the names of the players in your group.  If you require any assistance, please call the Logo Building.

Chelsea Hint

Our own Michael Sacks, Director of Membership, uncovered a simple step that might be keeping you from obtaining access to all 16 courts when you submit a reservation request. When making a request for courts, during the “Facility Selection,” you can choose South or North in the first place and North or South in the second, but if you select “No 2nd Preference,” you are limiting yourself to only the courts available on the side you chose for the first place. Selecting “No 2nd Preference” deletes the second choice, so you might get overflow while someone else with higher points gets a court available on what would have been your second choice. Therefore, if you want the opportunity to play all 16 courts, avoid selecting “No 2nd Preference.”

Benches/SCTA

SCTA has ordered four benches from the Sun City Woodworkers that are similar to the ones we have already. One has been delivered and three more will be here shortly. One bench has been placed on court one with another on its way to be placed there as well. One each of the other two benches will be placed at court 4 and court 12.

New Ball Machine/SCHHCA

Thanks to SCHHCA for purchasing a new ball machine for the courts. The new machine should arrive at the end of September. EVERYONE WHO WISHES TO USE THE NEW MACHINE WILL BE REQUIRED TO TAKE AN ORIENTATION. The old machine is being sold to The Haven and proceeds are expected to be used to purchase a new ball hopper.

RENEWING YOUR SCTA MEMBERSHIP FOR 2023

As fall approaches, it’s time to think about renewing your SCTA membership for 2023. In a month or so we will send out a link to the registration form. The 2023 process has changed to be more convenient for many of you. In 2022 we collected data as to whether you wished to auto-renew for 2023. A yes answer means that you don’t need to fill out a registration form for 2023; your information will simply be copied forward. Your CAM card will be charged $50 at the end of January and the charge will hit your account sometime in February. Please review the attached list of current members with their auto-renew choice.

Here are your options;

      1. If your auto-renew is yes and you are happy with your entry, don’t do anything further.
      2. If your auto-renew status is yes, and you don’t wish to auto-renew, email Michael Sacks at msacks3@gmail.com to change your status; and
      3.  If your auto-renew status is no, but you do wish to auto-renew, email Michael Sacks at msacks3@gmail.com, and
      4.  Any NEW member signing up on or after September 1, 2022, will get credit for the remainder of the year and through 2023.

NEW AED SIGNS

Thanks to Becky Nesta’s suggestion, SCTA has installed additional signs on the boxes that house our AED equipment. This should make this vital equipment more noticeable. Thanks, Becky. If you have an idea for more safety, please let us know.

SCTA News – August 22, 2022

SCTA ADVOCATES ON BEHALF OF ITS MEMBERS

One of the responsibilities of SCTA’s mission is to advocate for continued improvement of our facilities and playing experience. A recent example of how our ongoing relationship with the Community Association and our consistent advocacy has paid off for our members is the installation of a French drain between courts 2 and 3 by the Community. This drain will provide more playing time for our members on courts 3 and 4 following a rain event.  In fact, subsequent checks after recent rains indicate that the drain is working as it should. We hope you enjoy the improved playing time available on courts 3 and 4 after any rain due to this newly installed catch basin.

PLAYERS’ CORNER UPDATE

Working in conjunction with the LOGO Building staff, a revised system is being implemented for players who are trying to identify others who want to play tennis. Now, if you want to find an opponent or partner, simply fill out the appropriate form at the LOGO Building, and the LOGO Building staff will put it up on the bulletin board. Your request will stay on the bulletin board for one month. After the month is over, the LOGO Building staff will notify you that your request is being removed (or updated, as you request), and will offer other alternative avenues for finding partners or getting more involved in our tennis programs.

More CHELSEA

As of today, the front page of Chelsea is there–users just need to use the drop-down icons to see all the information. SCHHCA and SCTA are working to see if the front page can appear like it was before the software upgrade,  and have all the information readily available without needing the drop-down menu. This is true for Golf and Tennis as the Chelsea system was upgraded for both sports.
If you have any problems with the updated version, please phone the LOGO building. 843-705-4034, for assistance. Work is continuing on the front page. If we receive any further information, you will be notified.

Chelsea

It has come to our attention that the Chelsea system has been changed. Please remember that Chelsea is not managed by SCTA; it is managed by Sun City Community Association. Your board has sent out inquiries and as soon as we get information, we will forward it to you.

Access to the Gazebo

The Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has ordered our Community Association to lock the gate leading from the Gazebo to the court 1 seating if it is not being used. Below please find the steps for attaining access to the Gazebo area both through the staff at the Logo Building as well as Purrysburg Fitness Center. Here is what you need to do; the only change is where you go for the key to the Gazebo.
If you want access to the Gazebo during Logo Building hours–please keep in mind that the Logo Building closes at 4pm on weekdays and noon on weekends.
    • Go to the Logo Building and ask the staff member to open the Gazebo; and
    • Notify the staff at the Logo Building to relock the Gazebo when you are finished.
If you want access to the Gazebo after Logo Building hours–please keep in mind that Purrysburg closes at 9:00 pm, so make sure you are finished by that time.
        • Go to the Purrysburg Fitness Center desk and ask that they open the Gazebo gate; and
        • Notify the Purrysburg to relock the Gazebo when you are finished.
Consequences for not following this procedure can result in the pool being shut down by DHEC for safety reasons. As we receive further information, we will update you.

UPCOMING LOTTERY

Leading a Social Group this fall?

Information for the fall season of SCTA is posted to the web.

The fall season will run Aug 22 to Jan 15, 2023.

If you are looking for information on the lottery, see:

www.sctatennis.com > Leagues/Schedules/Forms > Lottery Guidelines & Seasonal Leagues

Make sure your group registration is submitted no later than August 4.

The lottery is August 11, 6:00 pm,  in the Lake House Ballroom.

Organizing Tri-Level for 2022!

Below are Tri-level offerings in local league.  HHI and CCTA will combine levels to form viable leagues. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE CONTACT MARY deCESARE AT bucksdecesare@yahoo.com. MARY HAS BEEN APPOINTED BY THE SCTA BOARD TO SERVE AS OUR USTA LIAISON AND IS AUTHORIZED TO REPRESENT OUR NEEDS TO USTA.

Levels Offered:

18 & Over – Men & Women 3.5, 3.0, 2.5

18/40/55 – Men & Women 4.0, 3.5, 3.0

18/40/55 -Men & Women 4.5, 4.0, 3.5

MAJOR CHANGE:

OPTION ONE: USTA SC will offer a State Championship this year September 9/17-9/19. In order to participate in the opportunity to advance, a local league will need to play earlier than what has historically been a winter league.  In order to accomplish this, a possible tournament format will be used over a two-week period that could include weekends, if needed.  In order to be eligible for the State championship, all players must play 1 match (one default or one retirement would count).  Team rosters would be best suited to remain small to get everyone qualified within probably 3 matches.  If this is an opportunity your team would like to pursue, please contact me directly – Jackie Reynecke at jreynecke58@gmail.com.

OPTION TWO: Since this league is used to playing October – December, we will also welcome teams to express their desire to play in a league geared towards normal weekly play within a determined number of rounds against opponents.  There will be no advancement to state since it will be after the State championship has concluded.  If your team is interested in a format like this, please contact me directly – Jackie Reynecke at jreynecke58@gmail.com.  This will be a non-advancing league or “other” league.

If you’re interested in both scenarios, please contact me directly as well.

Thank You!
