2023 SCTA Fall Season Lottery Announcement

Requests for Captaining/Leading a traditional team/group are now available on the web page, under FORMS, for the FALL SCTA lottery. To see Combo and InterClub team captains who have registered: see Lottery Guidelines & Seasonal Leagues, pg 2 & 3.

Save the Date

The next SCTA Event to be hosted on our courts will be the “Battle of the Sun City’s” to be held on September 7th and 8th!!!  Sun City Peachtree will be visiting Sun City Hilton Head to participate in a tennis event open to both men and women.  Why should softball have all the FUN???  More details will follow in the upcoming weeks, but please circle these dates on your calendar, as we are hoping this will become an annual event.

Court Conditions

With rain for several days and now extreme dry heat we will be making adjustments to the underground watering system. With all the rain very little water has been needed. Now we’ll need to make adjustments, and our crew is on top of it. Please keep in mind, these adjustments need to be done incrementally.

From the Logo Building Staff: Court 9 Maintenance

Court 9 is experiencing dryness issues that the maintenance crew are working to repair. Per the contractors’ request, we are sending core samples to them to determine the extent of the problem. As a safety precaution, court 9 is closed daily starting at noon until the problem is resolved. With varying weather conditions daily, the Logo staff will evaluate court 9’s condition 1 hour prior to court time from the noon court time onward through 3pm M-F. If the court appears playable and safe, the Logo Building staff will change the status of the court from being Closed to being Available to Book. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding of the need to do this for the safety of the players.

Have a happy and safe tennis week!

Mix & Match

This year’s Mix & Match Tournament was the BEST ever. Over 200 participated.  Thanks to Dudley and all the volunteers who helped make this such a great event.

Semi-Annual Membership Meeting

We had a large crowd for our Semi-Annual membership meeting.  Very vibrant discussion.  Minutes to be posted later next week.

Calling all 3.0 Ladies….

If you are either SCTA Club rated or have a current USTA rating of 3.0, you are invited to join Sun City’s Ladies 3.0 IntraClub for the fall 2023 Season.  We play every Wednesday from noon to 2 pm., weather permitting.  Our fall season will run from September 6, 2023 to January 17, 2024.  We have 6 teams with a total of 78 members (13 per team).  Space is limited, so don’t wait too long to sign up!

To sign up:  Send an email to Carolyn Walton at crlynwalton@yahoo.com, with 3.0 Fall IntraClub as the subject, and  your name and the best phone number to reach you in the body.  I will reply to your email with “got it”, and that is your confirmation that you are on a team this fall.

Carolyn also needs 6 captains….if you are interested in being one of them, say so in your email!  The captains will be selected later in the summer!

Hope to see you all on the courts!

Please Don’t Enter Your Court Area Early

Players preparing to come on to the courts should not enter the court area until their assigned court time.  Entering the court area is disruptive to the players as they are finishing their matches.  This includes court 4 while the ball machine is in use.

Bucket Brigade

The Bucket Brigade was in action early this morning.  From the following hint see if you can figure out what the bucket brigade accomplished. When digging you normally hit a ????.

Happy Tennis Everyone.  Enjoy the upcoming week.

SCTA News – April 17, 2023

Policy and Procedure Vote

By now you should all have received an email asking you to vote on the updated Policy and Procedure (P&P) manual.  A committee of five worked on this document for the better part of the last 10 months — Sheryl Tschetter, Deb Ward, Art Rothenberg, Mary deCesare, and Cindy Good.  The goal was to have the P&P better represent the updates that have occurred within SCTA over the last five years — an example is that we no longer scan our CAM cards prior to play.  The SCTA membership was sent this new P&P along with a list of all the major changes in an Eblast on March 14th and again on April 3rd.  The P&P was then discussed in open session during the Board’s monthly meeting on April 5th.   We want to thank the team of five for their hard work and ask that all SCTA members VOTE.  Voting will close on Tuesday evening at 11:55 PM.

Mix & Match URGENT Requests

We have pressing two issues concerning Mix & Match festivities:
GRILL FRIDGE – We need a refrigerator! Due to the 200+ players plus volunteers and spectators, the supplies for the grill will be quite large. We are seeking somebody who has an extra refrigerator that could be either transported and maintained in the Logo Building or else at a house nearby and kept accessible. Do you have a second fridge in the garage or elsewhere that could be used for several days?
GRILL MANAGER – For the Saturday-Sunday period we need an experienced grill manager to be sure everything is put out and running smoothly on our two busiest days. UNfortunately, we will lose our Thursday-Friday manager due to travel commitments. Do you know somebody from softball or other background who fits the bill?
“MATCH POINT” IS SATURDAY – the very fun and very charitable fundraiser called “Match Point” will now be held between the two Mix & Match matches on Saturday. Every tennis player within Sun City is eligible to participate in the fun for prizes plus a raffle. Look for announcements and sign-up instructions coming soon.
SUBS – Still seeking subs and perhaps even full-time players to plug holes left by injury withdrawals, but you MUST SIGN UP. THere is no charge until the tournament begins and you are confirmed as a player. Subs get the free grill food token when they play!

LOGO BUILDING NEWS

When you sign up for a tennis clinic, only sign up for the clinic with your current rating or below.  This enables the pros to run the clinic for the maximum benefit of all participating.  Clinics that do not indicate a level are designed to handle all levels of play, and you can sign up for those as you wish.  Thank you.

Also, if you have misplaced a tennis racquet, please contact the Logo Building and describe it to us to claim it.

MIX N MATCH UPDATE

Registrations for the April 27-30 Mix & Match Social Tournament were fast and furious in the first week of sign-ups. Of the 160 available team roster spots, only 8 vacancies remain. The 3.0 women lead the way with 46 registrations for 40 slots, meaning there is already a Waitlist and Sub pool. Registration will remain open for all levels due to the inevitable withdrawals for injury, travel, schedule conflicts and emergencies.

Please note that per SCTA rules state that tournament players must have a Club or USTA ranking unless you are a longstanding member with a “grandfathered” self rating. There is plenty of time to obtain a Club rating before the tournament.

Here is the current distribution of registered players. Please feel free to sign up for the Waitlist and Subs

Sign up if you missed the initial sign-up week because many on the Waitlist will get their confirmation of a roster slot as players withdraw.

The Sun City Tennis Association (SCTA) Bylaws require the use of Robert’s Rules of Order (Robert’s Rules). At the Board’s first meeting of 2023 Robert’s Rules, (a simplified version) was utilized.

The business of the Board through the various reports and motions was completed in 26 minutes. The next 28 minutes was utilized listening to the requests and topics proffered by Members.

Robert’s Rules is the most complete set of universally accepted guidelines/rules of parliamentary procedure. Robert’s Rules is widely used by commercial entities and non-profits, such as our tennis club, which will be using Robert’s Rules moving forward.

For those interested in its origin and the genesis of Robert’s Rules, please find the below Wikipedia link.

Court Reservations Changes and Cancellations Procedures

When a situation arises that causes the Logo Building staff to change or cancel a reservation as a result of court maintenance or problems with court availability, the player listed as player 1 on the Chelsea court sheet (otherwise known as the captain) is the only person notified.  It is that person’s responsibility to notify the other players listed on the court with them of any information they receive about court changes or cancellations.
