Etiquette at USTA Matches

This week an unfortunate incident occurred during a USTA match hosted at Sun City. A spectator at one of the matches (a Sun City resident) insisted on coaching from the sidelines when players had the score wrong or were not serving from the correct side during a tie breaker. This spectator refused to quiet down even after being asked repeatedly. Understandably, our opponents have asked that we forfeit that line of the match and have reported us to the USTA coordinator and launched a complaint against Sun City.
This behavior fails to meet the standard that we expect from our USTA players and spectators. We expect our players to congratulate their opponents on a great shot and to say nothing on an unforced error. We expect our spectators not to insert themselves into a match.

The Next Board Meeting Is Wednesday, October 11

Time: Wednesday, October 11 at 6:00 PM.
Location: Lakehouse – Bayside Room
An agenda will be sent out by eblast no later than Wednesday, Oct 4.

Caution: Linked Court Requests Do Not Work on Courts 13 – 16

Be aware that normal or recurring requests for LINKED courts will NOT work if there are not enough courts on the SOUTH side for BOTH of your courts.   Due to a software limitation, Chelsea cannot link courts on the NORTH side, or link courts 12 & 13 since court 13 is on the NORTH side. If there is only one court left for the time slot your linked request selected, you will get overflow, and the available court will be given to another request even if that request has a higher point count. One way to get around this is to put in multiple independent requests for the north side only.   Also, if your request (linked or not) has received overflow, check Chelsea’s Booking Window frequently (several times per day), as people sometimes cancel their assigned courts.

SCTA News – September 1, 2023

Special Thanks to Bruce McConnell

A few years ago Bruce McConnell, former President of SCTA, prepared a plan for steps to take, people to assign, and tasks to complete prior to a forecasted hurricane and its aftermath.

  • This document proved invaluable during the past few days.  Starting with notification to the Bucket Brigade to be on standby, pre-assignment to each team member of their assigned duties, and implementation.  Every documented step worked exactly as planned.
  • Volunteers from our Bucket Brigade included Chris Scott, Michael Sacks, Steve Sandike, Gary Roy, Diane Dowling, Judy Sharkey. Diane & Judy removed all tie downs from windscreens. Michael, Steve and Gary assisted Gavin’s crew in securing windscreens.  Paul Lewis took care of court brushes and brooms, . Chris took care of courtside Recycle containers removed and power washed
  • A fantastic team effort by the Bucket Brigade, you are deeply appreciated
  • On behalf of the entire SCTA board a very special thanks to Bruce McConnell for taking the time to prepare this plan, IT WORKED.

I’m pleased to be able to provide additional details and key dates. CCTA will have a league and Hilton Head will have a league. The winning team of each CCTA flight will have a play-off with the corresponding winners from Hilton Head. There will be no State or subsequent championships. Ratings are not affected. The age groups will be different, giving teams the opportunity to mix it up a bit: 50+, 60+, and 70+. These age groups apply ONLY TO THIS FALL LEAGUE.
Age groups for all other seasons will remain the same as they’ve always been. Start date for play will be October 2 and the season will run 9-10 weeks depending on the number of teams. The play-offs will be the week of December 1. There may not be a playoff with Hilton Head for 2.5 women, as HHI may not have any 2.5 teams. (But it’s still possible.) Registration will open in TennisLink on August 21 and close on September 10 for scheduling. Schedules will be posted by September 20.
Teams must have a minimum of 6 players to be considered viable, but players may continue to be added until before the final match. Maximum player roster is 18. Entry fees will be $13.15 for each player.

Timeline for Election of 2024 Board Members

The Board has created a timeline for the process of electing the 2024 Board Members. The timeline is attached to this eblast. Lifestyles has reviewed the timeline to make sure that it fully conforms to the By-Laws and P & P, and has confirmed that the timeline is fully compliant. Note that the dates in this timeline are “No Later Than” dates: each task must be completed no later than the date in the timeline. But the Board may choose to complete a task before the date in the timeline provided that it doesn’t violate the dates for other tasks. For example, the task for appointment of the members of the Nominating Committee has a date of No later than Sep 6 Board Meeting. But the Board has already announced the members of the Nominating Committee so that task is complete. The Board will eblast updates to this timeline as tasks are completed.
